JP Pest Services has the proud distinction of being New Hampshire’s oldest and largest pest control service. It was founded in 1925 and has been continuously owned and operated by three generations of the Pestana family. Joseph Pestana III is President; Christopher Pestana is General Manager. We provide residential and commercial pest control services in New England.
J. Justin “Jack” Pestana was a first generation Portuguese immigrant who came to New England as a boy near the turn of the century. Even at an early age he was hard working and gregarious, selling newspapers and apples in the streets of Boston. As a young man his ambitions grew and his natural abilities in sales and service led him to create the J.P. Chemical Co., Inc. He sold janitorial chemicals, pest control chemicals and provided service for pest problems.
In the post World War I era, Chemistry was the miracle of the age. The chemicals themselves were plentiful, highly effective and relatively inexpensive. Pests were also plentiful and despite the Great Depression and decades of a sluggish national economy, Jack was able to grow his company. Along the way, he purchased an old farm in Amherst New Hampshire and established it as the home base for his operation and his family, which then included his wife Gladys; his two daughters Jean and Arlene; and his son J. Justin Pestana Jr.
Like his father, Justin was a natural businessman and leader. He too was friendly and social and very interested in the practical and theoretical means of operating a sound business. In 1955 he graduated from Purdue University where he studied the emerging field of Urban Entomology. In 1958, having fulfilled his active duty in the military, he returned to the family business to work along side his sister Arlene and his brother-in-law Ralph Smith and a handful of employees.
It did not take long for Justin to combine the modern scientific knowledge of pest control that he’d learned at Purdue with his experience organizing people that he’d learned as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps. This proved to be a successful combination that enabled him to take over the day to day operations following Jack’s untimely passing in 1962. It also enabled him to grow the company and set the highest standards of customer service and employee values. These principles still govern our company today.
Before Justin passed away in 2005, he had the satisfaction of seeing his two sons Joseph and Christopher enter the business as teenagers, work their way up through the organization and take over the day to day operations as adults with the same passion and commitment that he had. He also witnessed fifteen sequential years of improved operational and financial performance since Joseph III was made President in 1990.
In 2006, realizing that we have not been in the chemical supply business for a very long time and considering that we now exist almost exclusively as a service company, we decided to modify our name to become JP Pest Services rather than JP Chemical Co., Inc. We believe this is simply a more accurate and logical description of our enterprise and reaffirms to everyone the exact nature of what we do.
We are JP Pest Services; a diverse and progressive service organization committed to protecting health, property and the environment through Integrated Pest Management Strategies. We will continue to achieve solid financial performance by continuously attracting, training and retaining only the best people. Well trained, customer focused employees who believe in our organization and the services we provide will retain and attract more customers. This is our 82 year-old formula for success.
